The Avalanches are set to show their legions of fans just what they’re capable of, announcing a B2B DJ set with The xx beatmaker Jamie xx.

Announced this morning, the news was broken by Jamie xx, who took to Instagram to reveal he was teaming up with the Melbourne duo for what he described as an “actual dream come true”.

Set to broadcast on London’s NTS Radio at 2pm BST on Friday, May 15th, Australian listeners will be able to tune into the special set 11pm this evening to hear it.

The pair were previously set to appear together in Sydney back in March, for the “No Coal Zone” benefit concert, which was to see proceeds from tickets sold going towards ClientEarth and Immersive Climate Education.

Unfortunately, the outbreak of COVID-19 saw this event postponed until further notice, with no current news as to when it will eventually take place being made available.

Over the last month though, Jamie xx has remained busy, sharing his latest single, “Idontknow”, which was accompanied by a music video recorded one night before lockdowns shut down most of the world.

Meanwhile, it’s been close to two months since fans last heard new music from The Avalanches. Returning quicker than expected, the group embarked on a teaser campaign earlier in the year before releasing “We Will Always Love You”, their first single since 2016’s Wildflower.

Just weeks later, this was followed up by “Running Red Lights”, which featured contributions from Rivers Cuomo and Pink Siifu, with the latter reading lyrics by the late David Berman.

“Our new record is about such journeys, from darkness to light,” the group shared in a statement. “About life after (all kinds of) death. About the transcendent nature of music itself.”

It remains to be seen whether this DJ set will contain a taster of their upcoming record with unheard material, but there’s only one way to be sure, and that’s by tuning in later this evening.
