In a refreshing change of pace from the litany of bushfire benefit concerts being announced, the likes of Jamie xx and The Avalanches have announced performances as part of a Sydney climate change concert.

Announced this morning, “No Coal Zone” is co-presented by Young Turks, ClientEarth and DP Immersive, with all proceeds from tickets sold going towards ClientEarth and Immersive Climate Education.

Headlining the event is Jamie xx, electronic mastermind and one of the geniuses behind England’s The xx, while Aussie outfits such as The Avalanches and Midnight Juggernauts have signed on for DJ sets. Attendees will also witness the likes of Heaps Gay + Friends, Ptwiggs, DeepFaith, and a special screening of Jonathan Zawada x Mark Pritchard’s The Four Worlds.

Aimed at reducing the mining, transportation, and burning of coal (one of the biggest contributors to climate change), organisations such as ClientEarth are serving as one of the world’s leading environmental law charities, working globally to tackle polluting industries and hold governments to account.

“I’ve spent a lot of time in Australia over the past decade and each time I come I’m inspired to make music,” explained Jamie xx. “I’m always blown away by its awe-inspiring nature, the unrivalled friendliness of its people and the quality of its Doofs.

“The loss it’s suffered has been a blow to people all around the world, so it felt only right to come back this year and help raise money through this party.

“The work ClientEarth are doing to stop the building of future coal fired power stations will hugely cut the planet’s carbon emissions and will help to slow the devastating effects of global warming.”

“The world can’t stand by and go about business as usual, while the planet suffers,” continues Tony Di Blasi of The Avalanches. “Practices like coal power, that we now know are so harmful to the environment, have to be stopped and replaced with green alternatives.

“We have the means to make this possible right now! We must act to try and reverse the effects of climate change before it’s too late for our home, planet earth.’’

“Successive governments have failed us, putting the vested interests of a few before the well-being of us all. We stand alongside anyone willing to fight for change and for what is right,” adds The Avalanches’ Robbie Chater.

Tickets to “No Coal Zone” are on sale now through Secret Sounds.
