Tāmaki Makaurau’s favourite street party, The Others Way, returns on Friday, December 1st.

This year’s lineup is a solid mix of local legends, festival regulars, and the coolest up-and-comers, all blended with inspiring artists flying in from elsewhere in the world.

There’s Oakland rap icons Souls of Mischief, set to take the stage to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their groundbreaking album ’93 ’til Infinity. There’s celebrated US harpist Mary Lattimore bringing her incredibly beautiful new album, Goodbye, Hotel Arkada, to life in an unmissable performance. There’s also the magnificent Molly Lewis, who’ll enchant the Kiwi crowd with her transcendent whistling.

And that’s without even mentioning the sublime local talents including Fazerdaze, Dick Move, Pickle Darling, CHAII, Vera Ellen, Grecco Romank, and many more.

With over 30 artists set to perform across K’ Road, there’s something to suit every musical taste. But who better than the artists themselves to tell you who to catch at this year’s festival? Check out their top picks below.

The Others Way 2023 takes place on Friday, December 1st on Karangahape Road. Head to Under The RadarTicket Fairy, or pop into Flying Out for tickets.

“This is going to be an insane summer, I’m so excited to not only attend but perform at The Others Way this year! I’m such a fan of this line up and absolutely can’t wait to see amazing acts like Trinity Roots, Atarangi, BBYFACEKILLA, and of course my girl CHAII.

“I love how she incorporates her culture into these high tempo tracks that get the crowd moving everytime. The entire festival is going to be one for the books and for it to be held on our dear K’ Road is the best.”

Vera Ellen

“I am truly a massive fan of Mary Lattimore. She’s the soundtrack to my contemplation and my wonder. I crank her albums all the time at the record store and in my bedroom. She is the king of cultivating a world to get lost in and I am so looking forward to seeing how this translates in a live performance. I would highly recommend the album Silver Ladders.”

Frank Booker

“I’m incredibly excited to see two acts in particular – it’s a tie between the legendary Souls of Mischief (30 years since ’93 til Infinity. Wow!), and our very own Opensouls. There is so much talent in this group, and it’s been such a long time since I’ve had the pleasure of listening to them. I can’t wait!”

The Veils (Finn)

“As ashamed as I am to admit it, the Gods did not bless me with the ability to whistle. It is the most innately human instrument, second only to the voice, and it is for this reason I am very excited to see the magnificent Molly Lewis perform. She was blessed with a truly transcendent whistle, and I hope a little of her talent might even rub off on me.”

Melanie

“We’re always keen to see our friends in Dick Move, Late to Chelsea, and Marlin’s Dreaming. Ringlets and Office Dog are some of our favourite acts in NZ at the moment so will definitely be catching them. There are also some killer hip hop acts on the lineup with local legends Team Dynamite & Mā, and of course Souls of Mischief.”

ATARANGI

“I’m looking forward to seeing BBYFACEKILLA and Jess Fu – they’re two of the best DJs in the country who push the boundaries of sound and genre to their very limits. Both are artists who invite their audiences eyes and ears to interact with something beyond their comfort zone without any inhibition. Also, being on the same lineup as Herbs made my parents lose their minds. Pure excitement!”

Ringlets

“Salt Water Criminals should definitely not be missed. They’re playing in the early evening so let them set a beautiful, melodic mood to open up your night. If you like the sound of guitars there’s really nothing to worry about. And if you don’t like the sound of guitars then you probably haven’t bought a ticket to the Others Way and why are you even reading this?

We’re also big fans of Elliot & Vincent. If you’re into music that throws you into a dark, dripping cavern but somehow you’re still dancing then absolutely watch their set in the iconic and subterranean Whammy Bar. The perfect place for such an experience (there are pillars to hold you up).

Feshh also deserve your attention. The young ones are overtaking us I tell ya. They’re playing on the all-ages stage so you can leave your extremely food-sensitive cousin Ezra in safe hands while you run off and quickly drink 2-4 cold lagers. He won’t need earplugs (it’s time to break him in).”

Pickle Darling

“Mary Lattimore!!! I’ve been a huge fan of her records since Hundreds of Days and have been following her ever since. I never ever thought I would see her live, so thank god my set doesn’t clash with hers!”

Marlin’s Dreaming (Semisi)

“I’m really excited to see Fazerdaze. When I was just starting to record my own music in my bedroom, Fazerdaze’s EP came out (in 2014). It really inspired me to write and record, and I’m still yet to see them play live.”

Buzz

“We are most excited to see Melanie as we are massive fans and think they’re very unique and really something special. Their genre is also really cool!”
