Fazerdaze Deftly Explores the Pressures of Being a Musician on ‘Bigger’

Fazerdaze has continued her recent renaissance with new single “Bigger”.

The Christchurch-based artist’s latest is another departure from her early bedroom pop work, favouring the drizzled synths and grittier alternative rock touches of last year’s comeback EP, Break! (named as one of Rolling Stone AU/NZ‘s Best New Zealand Albums of 2022).

On “Bigger”, Fazerdaze vividly explores her journey into womanhood, vulnerably detailing the extreme pressures of being a modern touring musician, when your job can often threaten to impact your relationships at home.

“I have often felt that ambition and being in the public eye can be a point of tension in my romantic relationships,” she says. “I think this song is me trying to explore and overcome that with someone I cared about. For the production, I was exploring writing an anti-chorus. The synths do all the work and the vocal melody drops into a talk. I wanted to experiment with strange bendy synths and lean into a cinematic night time world.”

The release of “Bigger” comes before Fazerdaze embarks on a run of tour dates covering Australia, the UK, and Europe. Beginning in Brisbane on Monday, September 18th, she’ll then perform a mixture of solo and band shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Geelong, and Wollongong throughout September and October. She’ll also appear at SXSW Sydney next month (tour information here).

It will be Fazerdaze’s first tour since her sold-out solo jaunt across New Zealand last month, which followed a support run with Lorde earlier in the year (read Rolling Stone AU/NZ‘s review of her intimate Auckland show).

Fazerdaze is also nominated twice at the forthcoming 2023 Panhead Rolling Stone Aotearoa Awards, which take place at Auckland’s St Matthew-in-the-City on Wednesday, September 20th. She’s nominated in both the Best Record (Break!) and Best Single categories (title track).
