TE KAAHU’s stunning Rolling Stone ‘In My Room’ performance is now available on streaming platforms.

The ‘In My Room’ series sees artists perform from home following an era which has seen live shows become a rarity.

For her edition, TE KAAHU took to The Lab in Tāmaki Makaurau to perform three powerful waiatas (songs) from her critically-acclaimed debut album Te Kaahu O Rangi: “‘E Taku Huia Kaimanawa”, “Rangirara” and “Taupiri”.

“What I love about this session for Rolling Stone is the vulnerability and tenderness with which the waiata are delivered. I hope that people enjoy hearing them like this as much as we loved performing them,” says Em-Haley Walker/Theia, who created the TE KAAHU project as a platform for her compositions in te reo Māori.

Backed by Amy Boroevich (backing vocals), Jol Mulholland (guitar), and Levi Gemmell (lap steel guitar), TE KAAHU took listeners on a journey of utmost respect and love to her tūpuna wāhine (female ancestors), her beloved haukāinga river in the Waikato, as well as the principles of Te Ao Māori.

Te Kaahu O Rangi  was produced by Mulholland at The Lab, with TE KAAHU herself co-producing several tracks. The vinyl version of the album is set for release this Friday, September 16th and can be pre-ordered here. The album’s “E Hine Ē” is also a Top 3 finalist in this year’s prestigious APRA Maioha Awards.

In a glowing four-star review, Rolling Stone wrote that “the record’s nine waiata (songs) drape over you like a feathered cloak, clear proof of the transcendent power of music.”

And if you’re in Aotearoa, you can catch the singer-songwriter and band playing at Raglan’s The Yard on Saturday, October 8th (tickets here), and Ōtaki’s Māoriland Hub on Saturday, November 12th (tickets here).

TE KAAHU’s Rolling Stone (In My Room – Live) is out now.
