Lorde‘s excitement for her forthcoming fourth album is overflowing. On Sunday evening, the musician shared a rare Instagram check-in, captioning two photos: “Listening to myself.”

In recent years, Lorde has opted for the use of a newsletter to share her latest thoughts and relevant updates with her fans. That she chose to update them on where she’s at in her current recording process via social media itself seems to be an indicator of her excitement.

Still, the record isn’t nearing the finish line just yet. “We’re not CLOSE close you guys… i’m just getting so hype n needed to let u know,” Lorde wrote in response to an eager fan. “Start ur excitement on a low flame and bring it up to a gentle simmer .. we building stamina for this chapter.”

Lorde’s most recent check-in came in September as she celebrated the tenth anniversary of her debut album, Pure Heroine. “You may (like me most of the time) hold the opinion that this album has been MYTHOLOGISED QUITE ENOUGH, but a milestone is a milestone,” she wrote. Earlier in the email, she expressed gratitude for having that outlet to communicate with her fans.

“I think a part of me knew that I had hit a wall, and that I needed to invite in the compassion and understand I’d been struggling to generate on my own, and then I’d have something to draw from and mirror,” she wrote. “It feels like it’s working. I feel incredibly grateful that we have this relationship, that we can each give when the other needs it.”

In the prior newsletter, Lorde revealed that she was “living with heartbreak again” and detailed recent bouts of illness and intense sadness. “Don’t worry about me, I still laugh every day, it’s all moving, even when it goes slow,” Lorde assured her readers. “I’ve accepted the mission — I have a self to recover.”

Lorde’s most recent album, Solar Power, arrived in 2021. It followed her acclaimed sophomore release, Melodrama, which was released four years prior. The six years between her first and second albums remain the largest gap period she has taken between releases.
