The request line has been running hot, with triple j's Requestival turning into a runaway success.

As triple j’s Requestival tends towards the close of its third day, listeners are getting an idea of just how eclectic the request line can be.

First announced last week, the Requestival is exactly what it sounds like, with triple j allowing listeners to choose the playlist for the work week, with every track between 6am and 9pm being by request only.

Of course, this isn’t the first time listeners have been able to choose the content on triple j. Why their annual Hottest 100 is the largest public-voted music poll in the world, and previous events such as their Impossible Music Festival have seen fans choose a weekend of archival programming

Following a wild first day on Monday, and even more variety yesterday, the station has again found itself at the mercy of listeners who have been flexing their musical knowledge to dig out some real deep cuts.

While the morning’s arrival of Reconciliation Week brought with it a bunch of stunning Indigenous talent by way of Baker Boy, DOBBY, Miiesha, and more, it didn’t take long before the surprising tracks to start making an appearance.

An early highlight though was N.W.A.’s “Express Yourself”, which harkened back to the days in which triple j staff protested against the suspension of a staff member (who had played “Fuck Tha Police” on air) by playing the track back to back for 24 hours.

Dana Lyons’ novelty classic “Cows With Guns” brought back countless memories of the late ’90s, while The Cat Empire’s “The Wine Song” helped divide opinions thanks to its lengthy, tempo-shifting contents.

Although “All That Jazz” helped provide the Broadway vibes, the second-ever playing of Nickelback on the station took place by way of “How You Remind Me”, which was soon followed by the appearance of artists such as Robbie Williams, Death Grips, Spacey Jane, and more.

Despite appearances from Duran Duran, Panjabi MC, Kt Tunstall, and much more turning heads, one of the strangest cuts on the day was due to Hobba & Hing letting loose with the “drum and bass remix” of the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow theme, while Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” followed soon after.

triple j’s Requestival runs until Sunday, May 31st, with the request line still open via the triple j app. Relive the action from day one and day two here, and check out the day three playlist below.
