A photo exhibition from legendary music photographer Chris Cuffaro is coming to Auckland this week.
Shot in January and February of this year, Cuffaro’s exhibition will be showing at Art News Aotearoa in Auckland from Thursday, July 6th-Sunday, July 16th (see full details below).
The exhibition – which is free to attend – features special framed and signed photos, and all will be on sale via Webb’s Auction House online, with all proceeds going to MusicHelps.
Don McGlashan, Reb Fountain, Theia, JessB, and Tami Neilson are just some of the artists Cuffaro photographed for the exhibition.
The opening night of the exhibition takes place on Thursday, July 6th, and will feature live music by Ben Horlock, followed by DJ Murray Cammick (RSVP here).
“It was a thrill to be photographed by Chris, and to hear about him growing up in California and blagging his way into every gig he could,” McGlashan says. “I’m thrilled, too, that he’s donating the proceeds from his auction of these very cool NZ Music photos to MusicHelps – a charity dear to my heart – that helps get music out into the community to heal and change lives, while also looking after Aotearoa music workers.”
Cuffaro’s exhibition was previously shown digitally at various public libraries around the country, including at Auckland Central Library and Ellen Melville Centre, for NZ Music Month in May. His images will also feature in the September magazine issue of Rolling Stone AU/NZ.
“Coming to NZ to exhibit my work and photograph Kiwi musicians in February was an unforgettable experience, even without the cyclones!” Cuffaro says. “Meeting and discovering so many talented NZ musicians and photographers and being able to help, has given me so much joy.”
Throughout his distinguished career, Cuffaro has photographed some of the biggest names in music, from Nirvana to Iggy Pop, Elvis Costello to Nick Cave. His images have regularly appeared in esteemed publications such as Rolling Stone and Spin, as well as on more than 200 album covers.
