Angie McMahon has released a cover of “Reckless” by Australian Crawl.

McMahon’s reinterpretation of “Reckless” brings a fresh perspective to the classic track, infusing it with a poignant message about climate change, reflecting the singer-songwriter’s ongoing advocacy for environmental issues. McMahon’s version includes modified lyrics to highlight the urgency of climate action, a creative twist that aligns with her personal values and public stance.

She recently covered the song on triple j’s Like A Version.

“I first heard ‘Reckless’ on Gold104 when I was driving the car one day and I just loved singing along to it. I heard references to mother nature in the chorus, I don’t know if that’s what they originally wrote the song about but it got the cogs turning in my brain to spin it into a climate change song. I was – and am – thinking a lot about the emissions in Australia which are just insane.

“It creates a lot of fear for my generation and all the generations to come. So it felt really important to play the song in a way that is fun, but also trying to speak to a lot of the anxiety that we feel, and a lot of the anger that is happening,” McMahon told triple j.

The release coincides with the beginning of the Australian and New Zealand leg of McMahon’s world tour, which kicks off this weekend in Sydney (more information here). The tour supports her latest album, Light, Dark, Light Again, which garnered significant critical acclaim and several nominations, including for APRA Song of the Year.

McMahon was featured in Rolling Stone AU/NZ‘s ‘Future of Music’ series, chosen as one of 25 artists tipped for their global breakthrough moment.

“In a country spoiled for choice when it comes to singer-songwriters, Angie McMahon still manages to stand out from her Australian (and global) peers. Her latest album, Light, Dark, Light Again, contained some of the most profoundly moving lyricism of the decade so far.

“It takes a special artist to make you feel less alone in the vastness of the world, but that’s what McMahon achieves in her songs, instilling them with mantras that urge both her and her listeners to relinquish, breathe, and find light through the darkness. We’re lucky to have brave songwriters like McMahon embracing the feelings we’re afraid to face,” we wrote about the singer-songwriter.

Angie McMahon’s “Reckless” (Australian Crawl cover) is out now.
