La La Land racked up 14 Oscar nominations, tying a record set by Titanic and All About Eve, while Moonlight, Arrival and Hell or High Water also scoring multiple nods as the contenders for the 2017 Academy Awards were announced this morning.
All three were among the nine nominated for Best Picture, a list that also included, Hidden Figures, Lion, Hacksaw Ridge, Fences and Manchester By the Sea.
The directors for La La Land, Arrival and Moonlight – Damien Chazelle, Denis Villeneuve and Barry Jenkins – also received nods, along with Hacksaw Ridge‘s Mel Gibson and Manchester By the Sea‘s Kenneth Lonergan.
La La Land stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling will attempt to repeat their performance wins at the Golden Globes, receiving nods for Best Leading Actress and Leading Actor, respectively. The former category also features Isabelle Huppert for Elle, Ruth Negga for Loving, Natalie Portman for Jackie and Meryl Streep for Florence Foster Jenkins (Streep’s nod marks her 20th).
In the Best Actor category, Gosling will compete with Casey Affleck for Manchester By the Sea, Andrew Garfield for Hacksaw Ridge, Viggo Mortensen for Captain Fantastic and Denzel Washington for Fences.
Meanwhile, the Supporting Actress category features Viola Davisfor Fences; Naomie Harris for Moonlight; Nicole Kidman for Lion; Octavia Spencer for Hidden Figures; and Michelle Williams for Manchester By the Sea. Supporting Actor boasts Mahershala Ali for Moonlight, Jeff Bridges for Hell or High Water, Lucas Hedges for Manchester By the Sea, Dev Patel for Lion and Michael Shannon for Nocturnal Animals.
The 89th Academy Awards will air February 26th in the U.S. (February 27th, AU) with Jimmy Kimmel serving as host.
