Anthonie Tonnon is really making up for lost time.
The Taite Music Prize-winning singer-songwriter has today announced an international tour for his immersive new live show, ‘Cinematographer’.
Tonnon will perform in Auckland, Whanganui (at the Festival of Design Aotearoa), Christchurch, Wellington, Melbourne, and London this October and November (see full dates below).
Tickets to the shows go on sale to the general public on Friday, July 24th at 10am local time. The pre-sale begins on Wednesday, July 22nd at 10am local time (sign up here).
Three years in the making, ‘Cinematographer’ combines “live electronic music, cinematic, storytelling, and visual design into an immersive performance,” according to a press release.
Tonnon has assembled an impressive team for his new live show, featuring visual DJ Erica Sklenars, videographer Theo Taylor, stylist Karlya Smith, and designer Daniel Alexander.
“‘Cinematographer’ is part film, part Francophile performance lecture, part disco club set,” Tonnon teases. “It’s a world that we’ve built for this new music, exploring some newfound passions — the French avant-garde, cinema, urban politics of the 1960s, turn-of-the-millennium dance culture and documentary films, and the glorious, mystifying city of Whanganui.”

Arriving alongside today’s tour announcement is news of Tonnon’s first new music in over three years. He will release new single “Executive Assistant” next week on Tuesday, July 28th, which fans will get to hear on his upcoming tour.
Created alongside longtime collaborator and producer Jonathan Pearce (The Beths), the track introduces the sonic world of ‘Cinematographer’.
“‘Executive Assistant’ was a breakthrough for Jon and I because it gave us the sound that everything else grew from,” Tonnon reveals. “As an experiment, I started cutting up recordings we’d made with the band and putting them back together in new ways.
“The result reminded me of the sample-heavy dance-pop I loved in the 2000s. Jon suggested a squelchy acid baseline, and from there a whole new journey began.”
Tonnon’s last album, Leave Love Out of This, was a top 10 hit in Aotearoa in 2021. He won the Taite Music Prize for the album the following year. We also included Leave Love Out of This in our 80 Best New Zealand Albums of the 2020s So Far countdown last year.
