New Zealand music fans will once again wear their hearts — and heroes — on their sleeves when NZ Music T-Shirt Day returns on May 29th, bringing a nationwide celebration of local artists while raising vital funds for MusicHelps.

Announced as part of New Zealand Music Month, the annual campaign invites everyone from fans and musicians to offices, schools and record stores across Aotearoa to pull on their favourite artist merch and support a cause built around the healing power of music.

More than a show of scene solidarity, the initiative raises money for MusicHelps, the charity supporting hundreds of projects around the country that use music to improve wellbeing, foster connection and provide therapeutic support to vulnerable communities.

The organisation also offers counselling, wellbeing services and emergency financial assistance to people working across New Zealand’s music industry.

Participants can donate by texting MUSIC to 2448, share their favourite tees using #NZMusicTShirtDay, or form teams with workplaces and friends to raise funds together.

This year’s campaign arrives backed by a fresh round of grant recipients showcasing music’s reach beyond the stage. Among those supported in 2026 are respiratory singing programmes run by Respiratory Support in Nelson, a choir through Brain Injury Association Otago for people living with brain injury, music therapy initiatives from True Colours Children’s Health Trust in Hamilton, and inclusive music experiences led by MINT Charitable Trust in Wānaka for people facing disability and isolation.

Together, they speak to the broad impact of the kaupapa, from early childhood support and rehabilitation to mental health and community care.

Of course, there’s also a distinctly fan-first spirit at the centre of the day.

For anyone without a treasured band tee ready to go, the campaign’s official merch store is stocked with gear from homegrown artists, while organisers are encouraging supporters to hit merch tables at upcoming gigs and back local acts directly.

As ever, the message is simple: wear a tee, support local music, help people in need.
