Bruce Springsteen has never been one to bite his tongue, and on the opening night of his latest US tour, he made that crystal clear.
Kicking off the ‘Land of Hope & Dreams’ tour in Minneapolis, the Boss used the stage for a pointed political address – one that zeroed in on Donald Trump and the current state of American leadership.
Per Variety, he delivered a fiery speech to the packed arena, accusing the president of being unable to face reality, declaring he “can’t handle the truth”, while framing the current moment as a defining test for the country’s democratic ideals.
The show doubled as both a concert and a call to action. “We are living through some very dark times,” he began. “Our American values that have sustained us for 250 years are being challenged as never before. We’ve got our young men and women’s lives at risk In an unconstitutional and illegal war,” he said.
“This is happening now,” he said multiple times.
The Minneapolis opening show carries particular weight, having inspired his recent protest track “Streets of Minneapolis”, written in response to a controversial federal immigration crackdown and the deaths of two civilians earlier this year.
Springsteen has been unwavering in his stance. In the lead-up to the tour, he made it clear that alienating parts of his audience wasn’t a concern, insisting that speaking out has always been central to his role as an artist. And according to Variety, that ethos was on full display. Alongside classic cuts like “Born in the U.S.A.” and a blistering rendition of “War”, the set leaned heavily into the present cultural moment.

The broader tour has been positioned as something bigger than a standard arena run. Springsteen has framed it as a defence of “American democracy” itself, set against what he’s repeatedly characterised as a dangerous political climate.
Springsteen and Trump have exchanged combative comments well prior to the ICE shootings in January. In May 2025, the rocker opened an overseas tour in Manchester with a show that included a speech referring to a “corrupt, incompetent and treasonous administration … taking sadistic pleasure in the pain that they inflict on loyal American workers… They are abandoning our great allies and siding with dictators against those struggling for their freedom”. Springsteen offered a variation on that speech every night on the tour.
In return, Trump called Springsteen “highly overrated … not a talented guy – just a pushy, obnoxious JERK”.
