With just two weeks to go until the official release of their Unreleased album, Brisbane icons Powderfinger have shared a new single by way of the slick rocker that is “Daybreak”.
Arriving ten years to the day since the band’s final public concert, “Daybreak” is characteristic of exactly what it was that made Powderfinger so beloved in their day – full of powerful lyrics, world-class musicianship, and the emotive delivery of the great Bernard Fanning.
“The mix of ‘Day By Day’ and ‘Daybreak’ – they’re two of the best sounding songs we’ve recorded,” Fanning notes, making reference to their recent single. “It sounds like a studio record… Coincidentally, it kind of wraps everything up really well. It’s the last thing we did and it has elements of most of the things that we did.”
“I don’t know if we were tired at that point but I would say we were a little bit at the end of our rope, for me anyway. [But I’m] super glad we can actually do something with this song now,” adds guitarist Darren Middleton.
First teased in late August, the first taste of Unreleased came by way of September’s “Day By Day”, which saw the group reveal they had unearthed a number of unissued tracks while compiling tracks for the 20th anniversary of Odyssey Number Five.
Uncovering material that spanned from 1998’s Internationalist to 2009’s Golden Rule, the band whittled down their list of 50 tracks to a humble ten, with the final result set to arrive in just a fortnight.
“Some of the songs were always earmarked for a release at some stage, and they were purposely not used as b-sides as we thought they were too good,” Fanning explains. “I feel like this is how we ended up looking through our old material, where we discovered other unreleased gems.”
Powderfinger’s “Daybreak” is out now, while Unreleased is set to be released on Friday, November 27th, with pre-orders available now.
