Auckland indie rock band Voom are back with a new album.
Something Good Is Happening lands Friday, May 16th via Flying Nun Records.
To mark the news, the band have shared a video for their latest single, “Trouble”, directed by Matthew Campbell Downs with support from NZ On Air.
“‘Trouble’ is about wanting something so badly, you’re willing to risk it all,” says Voom’s Buzz Moller. “It’s not just a boy-girl story, it’s about anything you crave enough to break the rules for. Sometimes, you take the leap, apologise later, and realise it was worth it. Sometimes you don’t and wish you had. Other times you just fuck up and get in trouble.”
The album arrives nearly two decades after their 2006 record, Hello, Are You There?. In the years since, they’ve been “jamming and gigging, writing, rewriting and sifting, reflecting on what surely must be some of the strangest times in human history” to create their latest offering.
They describe Something Good Is Happening as “the child of strange seasons and tides, strange minds, pedals and fingers.”
Written and recorded across multiple locations, with an ever-changing lineup of gear, the album has been shaped over decades of seasons and life stages—always steered by frontperson Buzz Moller. All members (Moller, Murray Fisher, Nick Buckton, and Josh Sorenson) contributed as multi-instrumentalists and producers.
For longtime fans, it’ll feel familiar. Something Good Is Happening is classic Voom—an eclectic mix of raucous pop earworms and heartfelt ballads, with enough sonic experimentation to keep things interesting.
Last year, they dropped two tracks: the cosmic “Everyone“, a laidback, jangly guitar strummer exploring the human condition, and “Martin Phillipps”, a nod to The Chills legend of the same name.
They also toured New Zealand with Reb Fountain and 2024 Taite Music Prize winner Vera Ellen.
Voom’s “Trouble” is out now via Flying Nun Records.
