Voom’s long-awaited new album is finally here.
Something Good is Happening marks the Auckland indie rockers’ first full-length release in nearly 20 years, landing via Flying Nun and picking up right where 2006’s Hello, Are You There? left off.
The album pulls together a string of previously released singles, like the jangly “Crazy Feeling”, the swoony ballad “I Love You Girl”, and “Trouble”, a track about wanting something so badly you’d risk it all to get it.
It’s been a while between records, but the band haven’t been idle. In their own words, they’ve spent the years “jamming and gigging, writing, rewriting and sifting, reflecting on what surely must be some of the strangest times in human history.”
Frontman Buzz Moller is joined by Murray Fisher (Goodshirt), Nick Buckton (aka sidekicknick), and Josh Sorenson for this one, with each member pitching in as multi-instrumentalists and producers. The album came together across different spots, and the result is a hazy, heartfelt collection the band describe as “the child of strange seasons and tides, strange minds, pedals, and fingers.”
For longtime fans, Something Good is Happening is classic Voom: fuzzy pop gems, tender moments, and just the right amount of weird.
To celebrate, they’re heading out on a four-date Aotearoa tour, kicking off at Auckland’s Double Whammy on Friday, May 23rd. They’ll hit Raglan’s The Yard the next night, before wrapping up the following weekend with stops at Lyttelton’s The Loons (May 30th) and Wellington’s San Fran (May 31st).

Last year, Voom also dropped two tracks: the cosmic “Everyone“, a laidback, jangly guitar strummer exploring the human condition, and “Martin Phillipps”, a tribute to The Chills legend of the same name.
They toured across Aotearoa with Reb Fountain and 2024 Taite Music Prize winner Vera Ellen.
