The Avalanches have continued their run of new releases in 2020, sharing a remix of “Criminals” by fellow Aussies DMA’S.
Releasing the track this morning, the acclaimed duo had been teasing the remix for some time, with screenshots of its production on social media over the last few weeks. Just yesterday, the pair revealed its impending arrival with another socials post, this time echoed by both DMA’S and their I OH YOU label.
The resulting reworking is a seven-minute opus whose opening echoes the likes of the group’s iconic Since I Left You debut thanks to the use of crackling vinyl, piano melodies, and a hazy sample before DMA’S vocalist Tommy O’Dell brings his soulful voice into the mix, which is soon accompanied by a pulsing beat.
While the track might be a little left-field for fans of DMA’S latest album, THE GLOW, the remix is essentially vintage Avalanches, combining everything that made them great, with everything that’s helping DMA’S become household names.
The remix of “Criminals” serves as the fourth single released by The Avalanches this year, and follows on from “We Will Always Love You”, “Running Red Lights”, and the one-two punch of “Wherever You Go” and “Reflecting Light”.
Currently, The Avalanches are working towards the release of their third album, having reportedly the record off for mastering recently. At this stage, specific details regarding the follow-up to 2016’s Wildflower are unknown, but are expected to arrive within the coming months.
Meanwhile, DMA’S recently wrapped up a run of acoustic shows in Sydney in promotion of their newly-released album, THE GLOW. The tour was intended to extend to Brisbane later this month, however due to COVID-19 restrictions and border closures, these shows have been postponed.
The Avalanches’ remix of DMA’S’ “Criminals” is available now.
