Tash Sultana has released the special album MTV Unplugged, Live in Melbourne, recorded during one of the city’s most intense periods of pandemic lockdown.

The release offers an intimate look at one of Australia’s foremost singer-songwriters, working in their natural environment: onstage, accompanied by their instruments and their voice.

The album was produced and mixed by Sultana alone, with the first single “Coma” being released back in February. “The best way to listen to it is to turn the light off and light a candle or incense,” Sultana says. “I want you to feel sensory overdrive by the end of the set. So dim the lights and just watch.”

The opportunity to join the MTV Unplugged family arrived at the perfect time for the artist, having been unable to engage with their beloved fans – at that point – for two years.

“The light that shines the brightest through me is when I’m on the stage,” Sultana adds. “I wanted to take the audience on the ride with me because I hadn’t played live in two years. I produced and mixed this entire record myself over a few months during lockdown.”

MTV Unplugged, Live in Melbourne follows Sultana’s Terra Firma, released last year to wide acclaim. Their second studio album topped the ARIA Albums Chart, and received a nomination for Best Soul/R&B Release at the 2021 ARIA Music Awards.

To coincide with the release of their new full album, Sultana has also shared the live video for “Crop Circles”. Taken from last year’s Terra Firma, the MTV Unplugged, Live in Melbourne audience was gifted with an impressive rendition of the track.

To celebrate the release, MTV Unplugged Melbourne Presents: Tash Sultana will air on MTV Hits at 10am on Friday, June 3rd in Australia and 12pm in New Zealand.

Tash Sultana’s MTV Unplugged, Live in Melbourne is out now via Sony Music Australia.
