Stan Walker on the ‘Cringe’ and ‘Beautiful’ Experience of Rewatching ‘Australian Idol’

November 2026 marks 17 years since Stan Walker crossed the ditch to win ‘Australian Idol’, and he’s never really looked back since

In November, Stan Walker will celebrate another major milestone.

November 2026 marks 17 years since he won Australian Idol, aged just a sprightly 18 at the time.

When he steps onto the Trusts Arena stage in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland a few weeks before the anniversary, to play his first headline show in Aotearoa in six years, the enormity of his career journey to this point won’t be lost on him.

“The whole [‘Australian Idol’] experience was incredible,” Walkers reflects. “Meeting incredible people who are still lifelong friends. But it was that experience of being catapulted straight into the limelight for the world to see, and just doing everyday life. That experience is something that I could never, ever, ever get back, or ever do again. So, I love that.”

Since winning the singing competition in 2009, Walker has rarely been out of the public spotlight in his home country, rising to become one of the biggest Kiwi artists of this, or any, generation.

Just two months ago, he added to his sizeable trophy haul at the 2026 Aotearoa Music Awards, winning in the Te Māngai Pāho Mana Reo category for “Mō Āke Tonu”, his collaboration with Hana-Rāwhiti Maipi-Clarke.

“I always feel like it’s just like an honour to be able to win something,” he tells us, “to be recognised for all the hard work that, you know, not just myself but all artists put into our craft… I feel very blessed.”

But long before he won enough AMA gongs to fill two trophy cases, Walker was just a nervous teenager trying to find a way into music on Australian Idol.

Almost two decades on, has he ever watched the show back?

“Do you know what’s funny? I never watch any footage,” he admits. “I haven’t watched any footage from ‘Idol’ since ‘Idol’, unless somebody’s playing it in front of me as a joke or they’re trying to go, ‘Hey, look, we’re watching this.’

“I cringe so much at it — I don’t cringe at the experience, because it was one of the best experiences of my whole entire life and nothing could ever beat that, touch that, because it’s the beginning of who I was, and who I would become.”

Walker has been showing his kids stuff from earlier years in his career, “because they only know me for now and for as far as they can remember,” including Australian Idol.

“[…] honest to God, I sat through it and I cringed, oh so hard. I was such a baby. But it was so beautiful to actually reminisce on those experiences. And to be honest, there’s a lot of people who have passed. Two of my aunties, my dad, my uncle. So it was actually quite special, even though I was cringing to watch back that footage of all the auditions.”

Walker’s headline show, ‘Stan Walker — A Symphonic Experience’, presented by Fabrik and Mai FM, will see him reimagine and rearrange some of his best songs accompanied by both his full live band and a 30+ piece orchestra.

One week after the special show, he’ll turn 36. What would he tell that 18-year-old “baby” about the music industry?

“To always stick to what’s in your heart,” Walker says. “To always stick to your guns and know that your instincts are ultimately going to serve you and help develop you and get you to the place where you know who you are, you know what it is, just to trust yourself and just to back yourself.

“Because this industry is ruthless and it can eat you — it does eat you up and spit you out. Just to trust yourself more than anybody, to be honest.”
