Just two weeks into 2021, Adelaide duo Teenage Joans have already released one of the contenders for ‘song of the year’, with “Something About Being Sixteen” serving as one of the pair’s best tracks to date.
Premiering on triple j earlier in the week, “Something About Being Sixteen” is the first new single from the group since the release of “Three Leaf Clover” in March of 2020, which aided the pair in their winning of triple j’s Unearthed High competition last year.
Speaking to triple j about the track, singer and guitarist Cahli Blakers explained that it’s “the epitome of Teenage Joans”, and the “most favourite song we’ve ever written”.
Arguably their biggest and most accomplished song to date, “Something About Being Sixteen” is filled slick riffs, passionate vocals, and ever-relatable lyrics that speak to someone sitting on their “shitty couch hoping things work out”.
“That verse is just about giving hope to people who feel hopeless, and our music inspiring them, which is the best thing ever,” added Blakers.
The track also comes accompanied by a music video directed by Thomas Schaefer & Jack Bielby, which depicts a birthday party which soon descends into pure chaos.
While it currently remains to be seen whether more singles, or even an EP or a potential album are on the cards for Teenage Joans down the line, their immediate focus is that of an upcoming tour that will see them teaming up with fellow Adelaideans TOWNS for a pair of shows in Brisbane and Melbourne this month (COVID restrictions permitting) on the co-headlined ‘Something About Being Sixteen Is Boring’ tour.
Teenage Joans’ “Something About Being Sixteen” is out now.
