Perth rockers Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have returned with their first single for the year, sharing the surrealist gem that is “Mr. Prism”.
Releasing their third album, And Now For The Whatchamacallit, in 2019, the group spent the rest of the year touring relentlessly through the UK and Europe before the release of “Mundungus” gave fans an idea of the new material the group were working on.
Now, the band have emerged from the 2020 lockdowns with the enigmatic “Mr. Prism” – a surrealistic psych-rock anthem that showcases the band’s frenetic compositional style.
With the majority of the track written at songwriter Jack McEwan’s Western Australia home, with its origins traced back to the combination of a crazy tour schedule and an unchecked illness.
“After our last tour of Europe I had a plethora of reasons to see a doctor,” McEwan recalled. “First, he thought I had tonsillitis, so prescribed me penicillin, which didn’t help at all. I did Falls Festival over New Year’s and barely got through – turns out I had pneumonia.
“I was pushing through on all sorts of meds until someone offered me the HMS Hunter.S alternative and I realised no matter how sick I’d ever be, I could never turn one down. Mr. Prism (my sickly fun-fuelled fiend of an alter-ego) was born.”
Though it remains to be seen whether “Mr. Prism” serves as the latest taste of a new record from the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, the group are however embarking on an oddity for 2020, having announced their own headline tour.
In addition a support slot alongside Ocean Alley in February of 2021, the group have announced a trio of WA dates which are set to take place next month, with details available below.
