Not even 18 months on from their third album, Perth’s Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have announced the release of their forthcoming record as they share their latest single, “Tally-Ho”, today.
The new track follows on from the release of the group’s most recent single, with “Mr. Prism” arriving back in August. A blistering showcase of their high-octane energy, frontman and songwriter Jack McEwan notes that its origins lie within the late-night conversations that arrive by way of lowered inhibition and overthinking.
“‘Tally-Ho’ reenacts the classic fable of late night gonzo talks on copious amounts of chemical enthusiasm,” McEwan notes. “I wanted the lyrics to feel sporadic and impulsive, kinda like the conversation you’d have with a mate after a night out; where you just want to debate something, but most of your synapses are already fried, so you’re both blurting out gibberish, but really giving it a good go at sounding formal.
“A sober third party might assume you’re both morons but between the constant waves of inebriated dialogue you feel like you’ve activated God mode and are only a few online classes away from becoming a favoured politician that will solve all the world’s problems.”
Premiering on BBC 1 with acclaimed DJ Annie Mac overnight, the track serves as the latest taster of the group’s forthcoming album, with SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound set to arrive on February 5th, 2021.
The direct result of a year spent sidelined due to a global pandemic, the group’s upcoming fourth album arrives following time spent writing in a far different environment to what the band is used to. While their previous record, 2019’s And Now for The Whatchamacallit, was written between extensive touring, this new album is borne out of a time where the band’s calendar was uncharacteristically empty.
“For the first time in a long time I was home without any tours booked, no work, no deadlines and I felt free to create,” McEwan noted. “My writing process became ritualistic; every morning starting with a small walk to the local bottle shop at 11am and writing whatever flowed, allowing myself to design in all styles without boundaries, and not trying to theme the album early on.
“I haven’t had the luxury of writing this way since the first record, which I spent almost a year working on. It felt like I was myself again, creating without opinion or constraints. I was gliding through weeks with a day seeming to pass.”
While Psychedelic Porn Crumpets are set to release their new album in February of next year, the group will also back it up with a supporting appearance on the rescheduled tour from Ocean Alley, with all dates and details available below.
