Pavement have announced that some of Australia’s most exciting rock bands will join them on their upcoming tour of the country.

The US indie icons are returning to Australia next February for a run of shows. It will be their first shows Down Under since 2010. Tickets are on sale now, with just the Melbourne date sold out.

A different Australian band will join Pavement in every city. Out West, local favourites Pond will support Stephen Malkmus and co. at Perth’s Concert Hall. South Australian rockers Bad//Dreems will provide support in Adelaide, with the shows set to coincide with the release of their fourth album.

Acclaimed Melbourne indie-rock outfit Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever will journey up to Brisbane to support at Fortitude Music Hall, while punk rock band Romero will perform in Melbourne. And Melbourne four-piece Floodlights will pull double duty in Thirroul and Sydney, with their third album due sometime next year.

One of the most influential bands of the last three decades, Pavement really need no introduction. Hailed by music critic Robert Christgau as “the finest rock band of the 90s,” Pavement had one of the strongest string of albums in the 1990s: Slanted And Enchanted (1992), Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994), Wowee Zowee (1995), Brighten The Corners (1997) and Terror Twilight (1999).

While the band haven’t released a studio album since 1999’s Terror Twilight, Matador released an expanded issue of that record, Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal, in April.

And it’s a good time to be catching the band live, with Pavement having recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of their seminal 1992 debut album Slanted and Enchanted.

While Down Under, Pavement will also be headlining Victoria’s new music festival Tent Pole: A Musical Jamboree. Set to take place at Geelong’s Mt Duneed Estate on Saturday, March 4th, Stephen Malkmus and co. will be accompanied by several other acclaimed bands, including Spiderbait, The Schizophonics, and CLAMM (more to be announced).
