Ocean Alley have returned to the Like a Version studios for the first time in almost three years, offering up a mashed-up rendition of Pink Floyd’s “Breathe”, “Comfortably Numb” and “Money”, and during their recent appearance.
Airing on triple j this morning, the Sydney outfit kicked off their six-minute cover with a brief version of “Breathe”, from Pink Floyd’s classic Dark Side of The Moon album, which celebrated its 48th anniversary earlier this month. Merging into “Comfortably Numb” from 1979’s The Wall, Ocean Alley then return to the former album, closing out proceedings with “Money” after effortlessly bringing in the track’s iconic bassline.
“We listened to a lot of Pink Floyd,” Lach Galbraith explained following the performance. “Growing up, and our parents did as well, they probably introduced us all to Pink Floyd,” continued brother Mitch. “So when Lach suggested it, it was kind of obvious for us.”
“I thought ‘Comfortably Numb’ and ‘Breathe’ really sat well together,” added Lach. “The keys were matched and they just kind of flowed between each other really nicely. Then I was humming it my head, I was like, ‘Actually, that’d be a kind of cool thing to put in.’ And then I thought, ‘If we did that, it’s probably not long enough. So then, chucked ‘Money’ on the end, and it worked out a treat.”
The group also performed a version of their 2020 single “Tombstone”, which reached #14 in the triple j Hottest 100 of 2020. This position was just two places higher than their Like a Version cover of Player’s “Baby Come Back” reached in 2018, which in turn remains the only song from the weekly cover series to break into the ARIA charts, peaking at 91.
