With just over two weeks to go until the release of their highly-anticipated second album, Sydney trio Middle Kids have given fans another taste of their new record by way of the new single, “Stacking Chairs”.
Following on from previous singles “R U 4 Me”, “Questions”, and “Cellophane (Brain)”, “Stacking Chairs” is the latest tune to be taken from the group’s new album, Today We’re The Greatest, which arrives on March 19th.
A slow, building track which reaches an almost euphoric peak at the arrival of the chorus, lead singer/songwriter Hannah Joy explains that the track’s origins lie within her marriage to husband and bandmate Tim Fitz.
“I never thought I was going to get married – I didn’t think I would be able to love someone forever,” Joy explains. “I was scared that I would feel trapped and suffocated or alternatively leave or be left with a pile of ash and rubble.
“Going on the journey of marriage with Tim has been profound. It is very liberating having someone see you in your entirety and stay. Tim embodies that kind of ‘stacking chairs’ love – he’s not just about the party. He’s around afterward when I’m tired and ugly and loves me in those moments”
In a statement released alongside the track, Fitz notes that the personal subject matter of the track was complemented by the fact that Joy was also heavily pregnant at the time of recording.
“Hannah was nailing vocal and guitar takes with a huge belly,” he recalls. “Then she would sleep on the couch while we worked on other stuff.
“We recorded 12 songs in 14 days and left the studio on the last day to fly back to Australia for a tour. It was an intense time… There are these triumphant trills that come in at the beginning of each chorus which is about 20 things all playing the same chord and rhythm.”
“Stacking Chairs” is set to appear on Today We’re The Greatest when it’s officially released on March 19th. The group will also be launching the album with an Australian tour in May, with details available below.
