Lola Scott has dropped her addictive new single, titled “Caffeine”.
The Sydney singer-songwriter wrote the song in an old church in rural Australia during the breakdown of a relationship.
“This song felt like a premonition of a breakup,” Scott explains. “I was battling insomnia after moving out alone, I relied heavily on caffeine that worsened my sleepless nights. My restless mind and anxious attachment strained my relationship.
That’s why lyrics like “maybe I just need another hobby / So I don’t remember the night you forgot me” are loaded with meaning for Scott, reflecting her desire to distract her mind from a fading romance.
“I struggled to sleep alone, leading to more sleepless nights and clumsiness. All I wanted was someone to reassure me, to tell me they’ve ‘got me now.’ I felt incredibly alone while stubbornly trying to assert my independence,” she adds.
“Caffeine” finds Scott trying out different styles from her usual electro-pop fare, dipping into acoustic singer-songwriter territory in order to really bring the emotion of her words to the fore.
Watch the accompanying music video for “Caffeine” below, which was shot on location in Scott’s hometown of Bowral with Rob Agostino.
“It was mostly spur of the moment ideas,” Scott admits of the clip. “Some of the footage of landscapes were shots Rob had filmed previously in Tasmania. I feel very lucky to have worked with him on this video. He’s got great vision and is a great friend!”
To celebrate the release of her new single, Scott will play a stripped back living room show on Friday, July 26th in Sydney, backed up by local singer-songwriter Hannah Brewer and multi-instrumentalist Sarah Levins. Tickets to the Splinter Factory show are available now here.
“Caffeine” is Scott’s second single of 2024, following the equally romantically forlorn “Only Miss U”. In 2023, she took part in Live Nation’s Ones to Watch series, showcasing her music at Sydney’s Oxford Arts Factory alongside Sam McGovern and STUMPS.
