Close to six years since Lisa Mitchell unveiled her critically-acclaimed Warriors album, the beloved Aussie musician has today revealed the details of her long-awaited new record, A Place to Fall Apart.
Returning to the fold last year with “Zombie”, the self-described “ode to being alive” was a powerful track from the indie icon, and satiated the appetites of fans who had been left wanting for the last few years.
Now, as the new year unfolds, Mitchell is diving head-first into new material, sharing the latest taste of her new body of work by way of “I Believe in Kindness”.
Described as a sophisticated and mature attempt for Mitchell to express her emotions on a serious topic, she explains it was written in September of 2019, yet features a message which has become more pertinent than ever.
“I wrote, ‘I Believe in Kindness’, the day before the Global Climate Strike (2019) in Melbourne/Naarm,” Mitchell exlains. “Everyone was going. My body hummed with a feeling that I couldn’t quite put my finger on… The next day 100,000 people gathered, along with millions all over the world, in devotion to our Mother (earth). Elders spoke alongside school students and activists from many industries as they shared our needs for a safe future.
“It is terrifying that our governments’ policies are nowhere near good enough to protect our futures and care for Country. And yet, the feeling of being together that day still fuels my faith in humanity and reminds me of the power of a feeling.”
The track also comes accompanied by a 16mm film clip which serves as a visual interpretation and exploration of the themes threaded throughout the track, directed by Ilsa Wynne-Hoelscher Kidd.
“On first listening, I couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming connection to nature and our unified human experience, where hope stands a chance,” Ilsa explained. “The images that ran through my mind were that of a nostalgic metaphor with a rough but organic balanced look at life.
“The analogue format was utilised to achieve a soft truthfulness within the visuals that aim to offer audiences a mosaic dream state to facilitate a drifting into their own meaning within the songwriting. To me, Lisa and her innate poetry felt native within this conceptual world we created for this song.”
“I Believe in Kindness” is set to appear on Mitchell’s upcoming fourth album, A Place to Fall Apart, which is set to arrive on April 22nd. Mitchell is also set to go on a national tour in support of the record across May, June, and July, backed by a five-piece band. Full tour details are available below.
