As concert stages around the country sit empty, a new series will see lovers of Aussie music relive their favourite pastime with a run of new drive-in gigs.

Since COVID-19 has all but crippled the global entertainment industry, fans have been eagerly awaiting new ways in which they can return to a sense of normalcy and experience live entertainment once again.

While drive-in concerts have already been taking place overseas, Aussies too have been getting in on the act, with Hockey Dad announcing a pair of high-demand album launch drive-in gigs in the near future.

Now, Australia’s Untitled Group has gotten in on the action, launching a drive-in concert series in Melbourne, set to kick off next month.

Taking place at Flemington Racecourse, the series will begin with a show by Client Liaison and Owl Eyes, before Alex Lahey, Winston Surfshirt, Boo Seeka, Running Touch, Lime Cordiale, Ball Park Music, Northeast Party House, and Baker Boy headline the following evenings.

While the event will follow current health and safety guidelines, including social distancing, contactless payment, and more, the series will be staffed by those who have lost work due to the global pandemic.

Speaking to triple j, Untitled Group Director Nicholas Greco noted that the upcoming series is a welcome return for live entertainment in Melbourne’s usually-bustling live scene.

“Melbourne normally has hundreds of live music venues and gigs operating on any one night and we are excited to have created a temporary, safe and government compliant solution to an industry that has been decimated,” Greco explained.

While registration for ticket presales is available now, The Drive-In looks set to expand their sights into the world of comedy and film in the near future, so stay tuned for further updates.
