Kate Miller-Heidke is set to return to the pop genre that she loves, announcing her forthcoming new record, Child in Reverse.

Having first entered the music scene in the early ’00s, Miller-Heidke released her debut album in 2007, with her subsequent three records all charting within the top four of the ARIA charts. With numerous singles to her name, the release of O Vertigo! in 2014 served as her last record of pop music for a few years, with the acclaimed artist setting her sights elsewhere temporarily.

In addition to a memorable performance at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest, a greatest hits compilation came between her venturing into the worlds of opera, theatre, and screen. Now, following on from the release of “This Is Not Forever” in May, Miller-Heidke has today announced the release of Child in Reverse.

Produced and recorded by Evan Klar in Melbourne, and set for release on October 30th, the record sees Miller-Heidke covering themes of love and fear, memory and empathy, and rage and redemption across the 11-track release.

“I keep getting drawn back to pop music,” she explains. “The minimalism, the economy… I find that incredibly rewarding and challenging. It’s like a quest to nail the perfect pop song. When it can be done, for me, as a listener, it’s my favourite music.”

Inspired to return to the genre after a successful stint at a APRA SongHubs writing weekend on the Gold Coast last year, Miller-Heidke found a creative ease working alongside Klar and backing vocalist Hailey Collier, with songs such as new single “Deluded” helping to inspire further recording sessions which ultimately resulted in the new record.

“What I love about Evan’s style is his freshness, a feeling of spontaneity,” she continues. “Musically the whole album came together really smoothly. I think that comes across when you listen to it.”

To celebrate the release of the new record, Miller-Heidke has shared the Jeff Andersen Jnr & Nick McKk-directed video to “Deluded” which showcases the upbeat, playful nature she’s renowned for.

Kate Miller-Heidke’s “Deluded” is out now, while Child in Reverse is set for release on October 30th through EMI Recorded Music Australia, with pre-orders available now.
