What do you get when you mix Lupe Fiasco, Forrest Gump and ‘How Do I Breathe?’ by Mario? Maybe something like grentperez’s new track.

Filipino/Australian singer-songwriter grentperez continues his hot streak with the release of his latest single, “Movie Scene,” the fourth track from his highly anticipated debut album Backflips in a Restaurant, set to drop on March 28th.

With “Movie Scene,” grentperez blends his signature soothing melodies with a genre-crossing mix of R&B, soft pop, and alternative flair. The track is steeped in nostalgia, drawing inspiration from early 2000s R&B icons like Lupe Fiasco and Usher. Lyrically, the song captures the charming awkwardness of trying to ask someone out, all while weaving in references to classic films like Titanic, Spider-Man, and Dirty Dancing.

“I really wanted to change the pace a bit and hit some areas of music that I’ve always been interested in but haven’t written yet,” grentperez explains. “For me, it’s reminiscent of 2000s R&B. There’s a little vibey nod to ‘How Do I Breathe’ by Mario in there too, a song I listened to a lot growing up.”

Accompanied by a cinematic music video that teases his evolving aesthetic while channeling blockbusters like Forrest Gump and Titanic, “Movie Scene” quite literally sets the stage for grentperez’s next chapter as he expands his sonic horizons. “I like films. I like music. This is a mix of both of those,” he shares. “The song plays out the cliché of seeing someone you like and trying to find a way to ask them out while referencing some of my favorite movie moments.”

Following previous singles like “Dandelion,” “Fuzzy Feeling,” and “2DK,” the track continues to build anticipation for Backflips in a Restaurant, which promises to be his most ambitious work yet—melding elements of indie-folk, pop-punk, symphonic pop, and ’70s soft rock into a genre-bending experience.

The album, which will also feature a deluxe edition with two bonus tracks, follows a meteoric rise for the 23-year-old Sydney-born artist. Since breaking through with his 2021 gold-certified debut single “Cherry Wine,” grentperez has amassed over 500 million streams, toured internationally alongside acts like Rex Orange County and Laufey, and won Emerging Songwriter of the Year at the 2024 APRA Awards.

He was also featured in Rolling Stone AU/NZ’s Future of Music series, where he was praised for his “genre-bending ability” and “distinctive falsetto.”

Backflips in a Restaurant is a taste of what’s to come in my artistry,” grentperez says. “I wanted to use this album to express who I am as an artist and a creator, what I have to offer in terms of differing genres and in this case, flavour. Growing up, I soaked up a lot of music from ’70s soft rock to 2000s R&B, Bossa Nova, Indie, and Rap. Since my first release in 2021, I’ve been itching to explore and experiment with my sound.”

Following the album’s release, he’ll take his new material on the road with a massive North American tour.
