Drax Project have announced a very special show.
The hometown boys will make history as the first act to perform at Te Whare Whakarauika Wellington Town Hall, when the capital venue’s doors officially reopen on Saturday, February 20th, 2027.
It will be the first event at the town hall since its closure for refurbishment 13 years ago.
“The landmark concert will honour Wellington’s rich cultural and musical legacy,” according to a press release, with Drax Project “returning to the city where they first captivated audiences as buskers on central Wellington’s streets, before launching a career that would see them become one of New Zealand’s most successful acts.”
Drax Project are a big enough draw alone, but Flight of the Conchords star Bret McKenzie has been added to the lineup for good measure. McKenzie will open the evening accompanied by The State Highway Wonders, his eight-piece Wellington-based band.
The show is also set to “feature a host of surprise special guests throughout the night,” including some of Drax Project’s “collaborators, inspirations and friends.”
Tickets to the special show go on sale to the general public on Friday, June 19th at 12pm local time.

Drax Project know this booking is a full-circle moment for the band.
“This is going to be a very special gig for us! We all met while at uni here and Wellington is where we got our start. The Town Hall closed before Drax became a thing, but playing there is something we’ve always dreamt of doing as a band,” they say.
Drax Project featured in two major Rolling Stone AU/NZ lists last year.
We chose Upside (2023) as one of the 80 Best New Zealand Albums of the 2020s So Far, before naming their massive hit “Woke Up Late” (2017) as one of the Best Australian & New Zealand Songs of the 21st Century So Far.
