More than a year on from the release of their third album, The Glow, DMA’S have returned in an unexpected way, sharing their surprise EP, I Love You Unconditionally, Sure Am Going to Miss You.
Recording in Coogee with Dylan Adams (who engineered their debut 2014 EP), the four-track release sees the group returning to their rock roots, proving that rock music still powers their beating heart, and serves as a reminder of the early days in which they’d throw a mattress against the wall to record demos in guitarist Johnny Took’s flat.
Having originally started recording demos while quarantining in Canberra ahead of their AFL Grand Final appearance, DMA’S felt inspired to be working with with no pressure or expectations, allowing tracks to emerge which showcased both the familiarity of their early days, and the immediacy they’ve since mastered in recent years.
“This EP was in the natural trajectory that you can sometimes take in a band,” Took explains. “You work with different producers, and you want to keep changing, but there’s also something in your core that pulls you back. It’s cool to get back to your roots sometimes.”
The standout moment however, is lead single “We Are Midnight”, a self-described “classic freeway song” which sees the group utilising shoegaze guitars as they provide a nostalgic sonic journey back to the days of their first album.
“‘We Are Midnight’ is a noisy guitar pop explosion which brings us back to our roots,” Took explains. “In writing the track we felt all the melodic parts were strong but structuring it properly to make the most out of the song was the hardest part. By self-producing this EP, we had to take more control of aspects such as this and seeing growth in this facet of our song writing makes us proud to share it with you today.”
Of course, for fans who have been paying close attention, the new EP might not come as that much of a surprise, with guitarist Johnny Took having expressed a desire to release an EP of “old-school” material during a chat with Rolling Stone Australia in 2020.
With the EP officially out today, the group will also release a limited edition 12″ version of the EP, pressed on ‘Blue Truman’ (named in honour of Tommy O’Dell’s Blue Staffy) vinyl on October 8th, with pre-orders available now.
Meanwhile, DMA’S are on track to finally kick off their long-awaited The Glow album launch tour next month, which will be followed by a UK tour in October, with details available below.
