Dean Lewis Shares Performance of ‘Falling Up’ on ‘Ellen’

Dean Lewis follows on from the likes of fellow Aussie artists Chet Faker and Tones and I in taking to the Ellen stage this year.

This year has been a veritable showcase of local talent for The Ellen DeGeneres Show, with Dean Lewis serving as the latest Aussie to share a powerful live performance.

Appearing on the show late last week, Lewis performed a rendition of his latest single “Falling Up”, with DeGeneres introducing him as “a singer/songwriter from Sydney, Australia whose songs have been streamed over five billion times”.

With Lewis performing in solo mode in front of a piano, the picturesque setting complemented the heartfelt subject matter of the track, which was released in early March as the first taste of Lewis’ forthcoming second album, and addresses the artist’s lifelong feelings of frustration and anxiety during the songwriting process.

“I always thought I would be happy when I finished school or when I passed an exam, or I got a job or a promotion or if I went travelling and then I was like – ‘Ooh, now I have a record deal, what if I have a big song?’,” Lewis explained upon the song’s release.

“Then, I had a big song, and I was on the road for three years and when I stopped, I realised it had all passed me by and I was actually less present and more anxious and stressed than ever. I looked back on my life and at all of these points along the way and I realised that I’ve never felt any better, it’s always been onto the next thing, always moving.”

Dean Lewis’ performance follows on from his debut appearance on the show in 2019, and comes after a run of Aussie talent on the Ellen stages this year, with Chet Faker offering up a rendition of “Low” in January, and Tones and I sharing a version of “Fly Away” just last week.

Meanwhile, Lewis is also set to perform an unplugged livestream performance later this month. Set to take place on April 30th, the ticketed event will be presented by premium digital live platform Moment House, and streamed from an undisclosed location in Lewis’ hometown of Sydney. Lasting 45 minutes, the acoustic set is noted to include performances of “Waves”, “Be Alright”, “Half A Man”, and “Falling Up”, which will all be shared in stripped-back arrangements with his band.
