Cut Copy have continued their run of singles this year, sharing the latest track from their forthcoming sixth album.
Having last released an album in 2017 by way of Haiku From Zero, Cut Copy re-emerged this year to release “Love is All We Share” in May, before “Cold Water” arrived in June alongside the news that their new album, Freeze, Melt, would be released on August 21.
Now, with just a couple of weeks to go until it arrives, the acclaimed outfit have shared the latest taster of the record, with “Like Breaking Glass” capturing the vital elements that go into creating the quintessential Cut Copy song.
“In the beginning ‘Like Breaking Glass’ started out as a completely different track,” recalled Dan Whitford. “Before one weekend I was mucking around in the studio with just a drum beat and an acid bassline.
“I never managed to finish it, but when I came back to it the next week there was something about that beat that felt compelling, so I started writing a song over the top of it.
“It is about the conflicted feelings of a relationship that has begun to unravel. Where sometimes against all logic, you discover that affections run deep just as a break up becomes inevitable.
“It was also one of my favourite songs working in the studio with the band when we crafted the middle section of the song comprising of weird delay effects, off-beat drum hits and metallic clangs where Mitchell was throwing a box of metal objects around the room, and we stood there recording him.”
The track gives fans an idea of what to expect with the forthcoming album, Freeze, Melt, which the group explained was written during an especially cold European winter.
Meanwhile, Cut Copy also announced their return to the live stage this week, with a run of shows throughout the UK and Europe for March and April of 2021, with tickets on sale later this week.
Cut Copy’s “Like Breaking Glass” is out now, while Freeze, Melt is set to be released on August 21st, with pre-orders available now.
