COTERIE have finally dropped their first single of the year, and it’s a big collaboration to suit the occasion.
“One More Chance” finds them linking up with Samoan-New Zealand legend, Savage, the South Auckland MC who found global success in the 2000s both as a solo artist and as part of hip-hop group The Deceptikonz.
Savage cemented his reputation when he became the first New Zealand rapper to enjoy commercial international breakthrough success with a platinum record in the US. From his debut solo single “Swing” to the Soulja Boy-featuring “Freaks,” Savage found commercial chart hits throughout the decade.
Writing and recording with Josh Fountain (BENEE, Flight Facilities) in Auckland, COTERIE felt that their new song needed something extra, which is when they reached out to Savage; just 24 hours later, “One More Chance” was done.
“The song is about chillin’ on all that ‘you did this I did that’ to and fro of a relationship, and just not pretending to be perfect,” COTERIE share. “Everyone needs to ask for ‘One More Chance’ every now and then.”
The Savage co-sign is, famously, not COTERIE’s first notable collaboration.
The band of brothers released “Slice of Heaven” with Sir Dave Dobbyn last year, a song they also performed at the 2023 Panhead Rolling Stone Aotearoa Awards.
“There have been many requests and covers since the release of ‘Slice of Heaven’ in 1986 but I’ve never been tempted to join a rework the track,” Dobbyn explained at the time. “Then COTERIE began posting their live performances of the song and social media pulled us together. I really enjoyed our time in the studio. Great people…. top blokes.”
COTERIE will get to perform their new single on tour with Tones and I around Australia and New Zealand this month.
In a recent Rolling Stone AU/NZ interview, the band discussed their memorable rise to the top of ANZ music, which has brought accolades such as being named Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the 2024 Aotearoa Music Awards.
“It’s a wild ride bro. We’re still just making music in our garage, it’s hectic,” one brother, Conrad, said.
COTERIE’s “One More Chance” (ft. Savage) is out now.
