The latest Mushroom 50 cover has been revealed.
Mushroom Group recently announced it was celebrating its 50th birthday in a big way with a series of events and initiatives to be held throughout the year.
Formed by the late, great Michael Gudinski in 1972, Mushroom Group released its first album the following year, the iconic Sunbury 1973, The Great Australian Rock Festival. Very quickly Gudinski established Mushroom as one of Australia’s foremost and finest record labels; 50 years later, Mushroom now represents Australian culture around the world, as well as bringing the globe’s best talent to this country.
That’s why Mushroom decided to mark its five decades at the top in such style. Before a massive Mushroom 50 concert in November featuring a to-be-announced all-star lineup, some of Australia’s most iconic musicians will release stunning works throughout the year.
Earlier this month, Dan Sultan followed Gordi, Paul Kelly, The Temper Trap, Missy Higgins, and Bliss n Eso with a heartfelt take on Archie Roach’s “Perfect Song”.
And now Budjerah and WILSN have combined for a stirring cover of Crowded House’s “Better Be Home Soon”.
“”Better Be Home Soon” is a classic Australian song. Iconic tune. Everyone in this country has to have heard the song on the radio or somewhere since it came out, and even young people know it,” Budjerah says. “When I sat down to learn it properly to record with WILSN, I fell in love with the lyrics the most. So much depth and story, and there’s so many ways you can look into it and get different things from it to relate to yourself.”
The pair recorded at Melbourne’s Sing Sing studio, and they only later discovered that was the location Crowded House recorded some of the album from which “Better Be Home Soon” comes.
“Working with Budjerah was a literal dream,” WILSN adds. “His talent is huge and as someone who is obsessed with great singer, I felt so lucky to be doing this song with him.
“Better Be Home Soon” was Crowded House’s biggest chart hit in Australia, peaking at number two. It has since become a treasured part of the Antipodean songbook.
