Beloved duo Angus & Julia Stone have announced their comeback, revealing their first album in almost four years will be a soundtrack to the upcoming video game, Life Is Strange: True Colors.
Announced today, the soundtrack album will be released on Friday, August 20th, mere weeks before the game’s arrival on September 10th. Led by single “Love Song” (also released on August 20th), the record is described as “unexpected, unguarded, unforgettable”, and speculated to be quite possibly be one of their finest outing to date.
Much like the Life Is Strange series, the record explores the overarching theme of the “richness and complexity of love between siblings, families, and communities”, something that both Angus & Julia Stone admit they’ve never given up working through.
“There’s always going to be this common thread that runs through all our songs, which is that at the bottom of everything is love,” Angus explains. “It always comes back to love, and things coming from within your heart. When all else fails, love will be the thing that conquers.”
Having recorded the album during the brief windows in which Angus and Julia weren’t working on their respective solo projects, the record itself is a unique one, seeing the group covering fresh new sonic territory across its tracks.
Meanwhile, with the bulk of recording taking place in the Stonecutters studio on Angus farm, addition recordings were made in Boulder, Colorado, and Neil Finn’s studio in Auckland, New Zealand, the resulting album is one that is as free and spiritual as the game itself.
“I really like this record because it’s a real mix of the old and the new,” adds Julia. “I can hear how, on this record, we weren’t afraid to try, to follow our noses and not to force any direction that it went. It didn’t matter that there was a really folky song next to a really dancy song. I can hear it feeling very free.”
Interestingly, this is not the first time that Angus & Julia Stone have had a connection with the Life Is Strange series, with their 2010 track “Santa Monica Dream” appearing in both the first and third episodes of the original game back in 2015.
Angus & Julia Stone’s Life Is Strange will be released on Friday, August 20th, with pre-orders available now.
