Alex G will finally return to Aotearoa for his debut headline shows at the end of the year.
The Philadelphia multi-instrumentalist, one of the most influential singer-songwriters of his generation, will perform at Auckland’s Powerstation on December 12th, followed by a show at Wellington’s San Fran the following day (see full details below).
Alex G – real name Alex Giannascoli – last performed in New Zealand at Laneway 2018, with a planned 2020 tour being cancelled due to COVID-19.
Tickets for his upcoming New Zealand shows go on sale to the general public on Wednesday, May 17th at 10am local time via AAATicketing (Auckland) and Moshtix (Wellington).
The lo-fi artist is touring in support his masterful 2022 album God Save the Animals, which earned him some of the strongest reviews of his career to date. “Placing its faith in the healing power of animals and Auto-Tune, Alex Giannascoli’s most hopeful record stands out for its grounded patience and moments of sharp lyrical simplicity,” wrote Pitchfork.
The Guardian noted Alex G’s album “finds him more ambitious, strange and embedded in studio experimentation than before,” while Rolling Stone hailed it as a “tour de force.”
Before arriving in New Zealand, Alex G will embark on a co-headlining tour with fellow indie favourites Alvvays, with their North American run of shows beginning in August (more information here).
In other Alex G news, the musician recently announced a new album capturing recordings from his 2022 headline tour (as per Pitchfork). Live From Union Transfer was recorded during his run of hometown shows at the titular Philadelphia venue last year, and the 14-song collection arrives on June 30th via Domino. The album will be limited to just 3,500 vinyl-only copies.
