This May, Australian favourites Luca Brasi will head out on a national tour to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their third album, If This Is All We’re Going to Be.

Back in 2016, frontman Tyler Richardson took us through the record track by track. Since this is a celebration after all, we thought we’d sit down again with Richardson to talk about If This Is All We’re Going to Be, ten years on.

“Aeroplane”

“Wowee, this song is still a goddamn favourite to play live. It still hits, it’s still a crowd favourite, and I will always love this one. I listened to this recently, and it just comes out the gates the way it should to give you a taste of the album. It totally set the scene. I have no idea how I thought a concept record would work. I also wrote another song called “Yossarian” for a split with Slowly Slowly based on the book. Good book, dumb idea to write a concept record.”

“Say It Back”

“Man, seems like I learned nothing in 10 years. I definitely forgot to soak anything in. I think it all happened so fast (the trajectory this record set us on) that I just forgot to remember things. I was definitely drinking heavier than ever during this period, unmedicated and making some questionable choices…. probably didn’t help the memories. Still fun as hell to play live!”

“Spin and Collapse”

“28-year-old Richo feeling old, huh? Mate, you just wait ten years. Still love the late night toxic and oh boy just getting out of bed at ALL is hard these days. I still love that notion of oblivion, and I’m not saying I’ve grown up or matured for that matter. Don’t take it for granted, kids, those years absolutely fly!”

“Treading Water”

“This song has a cool feel, and I don’t know that we ever did more in this vein. Working with our old mate Jimmy did so much to shape these songs. I’ll never forget the endless search for tone and the goddamn hair I lost stressing about it. This was still in the days when you could justify a month in a studio to absolutely drive yourself insane; we definitely achieved that goal.”

“The Cascade Blues”

“Still in love with this song, I often say it might be what I’m most proud of in anything we’ve done. I certainly recall trying to strike that balance between guitar and melody, and it became a theme for us. People still connect hugely with this one. I love the break before the double-time bit. Still gets me. Nice work Busby!

“Drop Out”

“Touring is still so special to me, just the idea of doing exactly what I said above. Getting lost somewhere else. Having all these different perspectives and life experiences only adds to it now. So excited to go out and tour this album. After an insane three or four years, I finally feel ready to go and do the thing again. Fuck yeah.”

“Overwhelmed/Ill-Prepared”

“I still have a lot of time for this tune. We had Tom come down to do that second verse, and his band Ceres are still my heroes. There’s so much emotion in his delivery, and I still feel it so fully listening to his songs. Reading all this back is so funny. I’m still dealing with the same stuff, and I still haven’t learned as much as I’d hoped. I still thrive on self-reflection, and Epitaph and Fat Wreck bands still rule. I’m grateful for all that punk rock and music have given me.

“This one gets so much love, and I am still proud of it.”

“Man, This is Living”

“I think I nailed it already above. What I do have now is an ability to look back even more; being older gives you that. Nothing in my life has ever given me what music has. From playing in a band to just loving music, it all set me on the path to who I am and where I am. We talk all the time about how special it is to tour now, and it’s just such a pleasure.

“Anything Near Conviction”

“This is still our most popular song; we had no idea it would get the appreciation it did, and it shows that it got buried at number nine, back in a time when people still cared about track orders. I can’t believe the doors this song opened for us. Still our set closer, or one of them, still gets requested constantly, still on high rotation for people who like our band. Out of all these songs, we have the most to thank this one for.”

“Count Me Out”

“How’s me telling people to listen to Georgia’s band? So wild to think what they and she became in the following years. I’ve always loved playing this song. It burns, it builds, and it has momentum. Georgia just goddamn nails it to the wall. I can still remember tearing this one apart over and over in the studio.”
