“Dancing in the Dark”? No, it’s not Bruce Springsteen, it’s the sizzling work of LAU, a Sydney-based pop star on the rise.
Lauren Abend has been making music under her LAU moniker for a few years now, including the hyperpop anthem “INMYHEAD” earlier this year.
This week, she’s released “Dancing in the Dark”, the follow-up to “INMYHEAD” and her fourth single overall. The song captures the highs and lows of an intense relationship, in which two people just can’t help but be drawn to one another, despite know that the relationship is destined to fail. It’s something that particularly plagues young love, when romance can be at its most exhilarating yet volatile.
“Dancing in the Dark” is a powerful testament to the complexities of love and self-discovery,” LAU says. “It captures the raw emotions and intense vulnerability of toxic relationships, urging listeners to reflect on their own experiences.
As LAU adds, she hopes that her latest song will “inspire others to break free from patterns that don’t serve them and embrace the love they truly deserve.” As the singer-songwriter wrote about “Dancing in the Dark” on social media this week, “THIS SONG GIVES THE MOST HYPER INDEPENDENT ENERGY.”

LAU’s song has already received the approval of triple j Unearthed. “More of that spring-loaded n extra-bolded pop,” Dave Ruby Howe hailed. “LAU is locked in on this sound in 2023!”
“Dancing in the Dark” follows previous singles “Dead to Me”, “Pitiful Bitch”, which both received support from Spotify and Apple Music, and the aforementioned “INMYHEAD”, which was well-received on triple j’s Home and Hosed.
It’s currently unclear if these songs will form part of a debut album, but LAU is building up a plethora of pop gems for any potential full-length record.
