Jonathan Bree: Part-Time Lover, Full-Time Smouldering Art-Pop Provocateur.*
The magnetic — and always challenging — artist today released “Part-Time Lover”, the third single from his forthcoming 17-track double album Don’t Call It Love.
Bree’s new single features frequent collaborator Princess Chelsea on guest vocals, and the pair’s winsome chemistry is more palpable than ever, sounding like a cooler version of Nick Cave and Kylie. If “Live to Dance”, their most recent collaboration, was suitably steamy, “Part-Time Lover” fogs up the glass even more.
“Part-Time Lover” is written from the perspective of illicit lovers engaged in a “rendezvous in dead dark streets,” hence the sensual melancholy that filters the air. Bree’s sultry drawl is offset by Chelsea’s sweeter vocals, her guest turn offering the ideal dramatic balance. The sense of romantic longing is aided by the repetitious refrain of “Part-time lover,” which is said no fewer than 16 times in just over four minutes.
“Part-Time Lover” should whet the appetite for Don’t Call It Love, which is described as being a “coolly erotic” collection (sold!). The album, which arrives in August on Lil’ Chief Records via Secretly Distribution, also features previous single “Savour My Love”, which made it into our ANZ music roundup.
Don’t Call It Love is the highly anticipated follow-up to 2023’s Pre-Code Hollywood.

Both Bree and Chelsea featured in our Best Australian & New Zealand Songs of the 21st Century So Far list last year, with “You’re So Cool”, Bree’s breakout hit, and Chelsea’s “I Love My Boyfriend” and “Forever Is a Charm” making the cut.
Chelsea, meanwhile, dropped Live at Studio Two earlier this year. The special record showcased Chelsea and her band playing completely live at Abbey Road’s famous Studio Two, the room made famous by The Beatles and Pink Floyd.
Jonathan Bree’s “Part-Time Lover” (ft. Princess Chelsea) is out now. Don’t Call It Love is out August 27th on Lil’ Chief Records via Secretly Distribution.
*This is a joke based on Mr. Bree’s song title. Rolling Stone AU/NZ is in no way insinuating that Mr. Bree is a “part-time lover,” nor does Rolling Stone AU/NZ claim to have intimate knowledge of Mr. Bree’s private life. That is all.
