While you’re just getting started with your week, Grecco Romank and Our Carlson are dropping a song for the apocalypse.

True to form, the Auckland-based trio of Billie Fee, Mikey Sperring, and Damian Golfinopoulos deliver an ‘anti-anthem’ with “Sidetracked,” offering a raw, scathing critique of societal decay.

Teaming up with idiosyncratic Australian artist Our Carlson, they unleash relentless jungle break-core beats and visceral lyrics packed with biting humour and self-deprecation – “I tried to write an anthem to save our kind and planet / But I guess I got sidetracked.”

Other lyrics like “global collapse imminent” and “the right’s had its hand around our necks” paint a chilling, dystopian vision that would be a bit much for approaching the middle of the workweek, if not for the sharp, dark satire on show.

The trio keep pushing boundaries. As they put it:

“’Sidetracked’ is the inaugural single of a new genre we’ve christened ‘Unklecore’. It’s music for the cool, garage-rave-throwing, mullet-wielding, soap-box revolutionary uncle in all of us.”

Grecco Romank have also dropped a lyric video for this trans-Tasman collab, crafted by visual artist and frequent collaborator Joshua Harris-Harding (the mastermind behind the band’s dizzying “2 Hot 2 Hunt” video). The clip brings the song’s post-apocalyptic themes of a burning world to animated life (watch below).

In other Grecco Romank news, they’re part of the packed lineup playing at new-ish Auckland venue Double Whammy’s grand opening party in this weekend (tickets here).

Joining Dbldbl, Na Noise, Dick Move, and FILTH, they’ll help bid farewell to the much-loved Wine Cellar and Whammy Backroom, and welcome everyone into the expanded, plus-sized space this Saturday, August 17th.

Alternatively, Wellington fans can catch them at GREAT SOUNDS GREAT Festival at the end of the month (tickets here).

“Sidetracked” follows Grecco Romank’s latest album Wet Exit (read their track-by-track breakdown). The album earned the band a nomination for Best Alternative Act at the 2024 Aotearoa Music Awards, though they were edged out by Princess Chelsea.

Grecco Romank’s “Sidetracked” (ft. Our Carlson) is out now.
