‘In My Room’ With Goodspace

The Auckland-based artist showcased his forthcoming debut album, ‘Let’s Talk About Death,’ during his ‘In My Room’ session

Goodspace performed from ‘The Goodspace’ for his Rolling Stone AU/NZ ‘In My Room’ session.

The Auckland-based artist served up a degustation menu showcasing his forthcoming debut album, Let’s Talk About Death, during the session, performing “Soap Dish,” “Bit by Bit,” and “Nests.”

Goodspace recorded Let’s Talk About Death in his home studio, named ‘The Goodspace’, the same space where his ‘In My Room’ session was recorded.

Goodspace was a solo cook for his debut album, completely self-producing, recording, and mixing it in this serene, sealed-off spot, which is likely why Let’s Talk About Death‘s palette is so warm and inviting.

Goodspace’s album also features lead single “You Only Give What You Leave,” with a narrative concerned with, you guessed it, death, stemming from profound personal experience.

“I had a very direct experience of that when my father passed away,” Goodspace explains. “I was in his house two days afterwards, cleaning and clearing out stuff. And one of my realisations was, ‘Whoa, when you die, you only give what you leave behind.”

The accompanying music video features dancer Zoe White embodying a sense of carefree acceptance and hope against a backdrop of a half-demolished building. You can watch the video, directed by Quentin Lind (who joined Goodspace for his ‘In My Room’ session), below.

There’s good reason for all the food-related descriptions: Goodspace is unconventionally rolling out his new album by reimagining the artist as vendor, album as menu, and music as the meal.

‘VENDOR by Goodspace’ opens on Saturday, September 28th at Karangahape Road landmark Lim Chhour Food Court. It “serves to recontextualise what it means for an artist to hustle for their work, reframe conversations around death while paying tribute to the familiar migrant stories of Aotearoa.”

Fans can experience the special rollout from 12pm, with an immersive 33-minute album listening experience beginning at 1pm. There will be a joint meal in the beloved food court afterwards (book here).

Don’t fancy that full feast? ‘VENDOR’ can also be experienced as a solo listener on Saturday and Sunday between 12pm-6pm, and Monday-Friday between 2pm and 7pm. For First Thursdays on Thursday, October 3rd, the chef – sorry, Goodspace – himself will perform his album at 5:30pm.
