According to Hoyts, the highly-anticipated sequel to the iconic 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada totalled at $13.11 million (including advanced screenings), towering over competition. Internationally, it racked up $233.6 million in total.
This week, Michael grossed $6.16 million. Last week, the Michael Jackson biopic led the local box office, pulling in $7.97 million over opening weekend. It’s performance in Australia mirrored that of the global box office – the film had the biggest opening weekend of all time for any musical biopic, with US$217 million. It also ranked as the year’s second-biggest global debut, behind Universal’s sequel The Super Mario Galaxy Movie with $372.5 million.
Project Hail Mary continued firmly in third with $1.03 million in its seventh week, while The Super Mario Galaxy Movie held onto fourth with $855,000. In total, the films have grossed $36.64 million and $37.83 million, respectively.
New horror film Hokum also debuted this week, bringing in $418,000 in its first week, while Indian-Malayalam language action thriller Patriot entered in sixth, grossing $304,000. In seventh was The Magic Faraway Tree with $297,000 – bringing its total box office to $9.81 million.
It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley sat in eighth, earning $205,000 in its opening week, while The Drama, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, was ninth with an additional $197,000. Rounding out the top ten was Disney’s Hoppers, with $180,000, taking its total to $9.61 million.
