Every creative has their own process, but it’s always a little helpful to take some time away from the grind to refresh your creative thinking. That’s what Stella Donnelly did, and now she tells Rolling Stone AU/NZ that she’s in top form.
Speaking to us about her new album Love and Fortune, she took some time away from songwriting, but felt that the songs were “screaming” at her. Now, she’s already working on her next project.
“Weirdly now in the middle of all this press that I’m doing for the record, I’m writing another album. It’s coming to me quite quickly,” she said, hinting that her fourth album is going to come much faster than the three-year gap between Love and Fortune and her previous record, Flood.
“I’ve kind of re-celebrated the way that music is for me now in a way that’s like everything must service the creation of music rather than everything services touring. I think when I first started it was like touring’s the best, I love this and you know I’ll just keep touring because this is the life, but now I’ve kind of flipped that a little bit and so everything I’m doing is in service of making more music, and making music and as it happens it’s music that I’m really enjoying making,” she added.
You can read our full interview with Donnelly later this week.
Love and Fortune features the singles “Feel It Change”, which premiered on Huw Stephens’ BBC 6 Music show, and the double A-side “Baths” / “Standing Ovation”, Donnelly’s first new music since Flood.

Flood made it into the top 30 on the ARIA Albums Chart. It also earned a four-star review from Rolling Stone AU/NZ.
“It’s been three years since the stunning debut from Stella Donnelly, Beware of the Dogs, but the absence has only sharpened her sound and introspective songwriting,” we wrote.
“The jangling indie-pop gems we’ve come to expect remain, but there are intriguing new layers elsewhere… With its thoughtful mixture of sonic experimentation and classic touches, Flood achieves exactly what a sophomore album should.”
Stella Donnelly’s Love and Fortune is out now via Dot Dash Recordings / Remote Control Records.
