Soft Play Love Australia: Koalas, MMA Fighters & Soap Operas

Soft Play chatted all things Australia with Rolling Stone AU/NZ in the midst of a busy period of shows and releases for the UK punk duo

Fresh from blasting through headline shows in Australia, UK punk duo Soft Play dropped their latest searing single, “Slushy”, this week.

The new single features a typically stellar guest turn from Kate Nash, with Soft Play trading a sweetly savage call-and-response with the indie singer-songwriter. “Slushy” received its first radio play exclusively from Craig Charles on BBC 6 Music.

After achieving their highest-charting album to date last year when HEAVY JELLY shot to No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart, Soft Play wanted to give more to their fans.

That’s why an expanded version, comically titled HEAVIER JELLY, will arrive in April. The forthcoming expanded version adds six new tracks to the set, some of which were recorded during the original album sessions and others the product of more recent studio visits.

“These songs are the bastard children of Heavy Jelly, strange experimentations/ delusions that didn’t fit the mould. I’m excited for our fans to get a glimpse into some more music that came from the world of Heavy Jelly. Strap in,” Soft Play’s Laurie Vincent says.

It’s not just in Australia where Soft Play have been busy touring recently. They completed a sold-out UK tour last year, including a massive Halloween headline show at Brixton Academy, and now look with excitement towards a run of North American dates, which will mark their first tour of that continent since 2018. Fans on that side of the world can also catch them tearing it up at Coachella next month (find the band’s upcoming tour dates here).

Before all of that, though, Soft Play sat down with Rolling Stone AU/NZ to tell us about their favourite things about Australia, but it could end up backfiring on Vincent after he called out imposing Aussie MMA fighter Alexander Volkanovski – let’s just hope the UFC star isn’t reading this…

Soft Play’s “Slushy” (ft. Kate Nash) is out now. HEAVIER JELLY is out Friday, April 18th via BMG (pre-order here).
