Borderline put on a polished Rolling Stone AU/NZ ‘In My Room’ session ahead of a big week for the New Zealand band.

Today’s a big day for Borderline. The indie pop outfit released their new single, “Heartbeat,” which is their highly-anticipated and long-awaited follow-up to last year’s stellar EP, Perfect Movie Scene.

Borderline worked with a collection of strong talent behind the scenes, recording at Roundhead Studios with help from producer Joel Jones (Will Swinton, Alayna) and Nic Manders (Georgia Lines, Six60) and Vivek Gabriel (The Paper Kites, Mice on Stilts) on mixing and mastering duties.

According to Borderline, “Heartbeat” signals the beginning of a new era for the band.

“We’re starting to focus more on what the song makes you feel and that was really exciting to explore in the studio,” they share. “We put real emotion into the songwriting and sound choices, and it really captures the essence of not only who we are as a band but as people too. That’s something others will be able to resonate with.”

The accompanying music video, directed by Tom Grut, below, richly brings the song to life (watch below).

“Lyrically, ‘Heartbeat’ was inspired by the portrayal of high school proms/balls in nostalgic movies and series. We tried our best to capture the high energy and good feelings you get from those moments on screen,” they add.

Borderline have become a go-to support band for the likes of Drax Project and Zed, and they proved exactly why during their ‘In My Room’ session.

Their tight arrangements, natural chemistry (the members have known each other since childhood), and musical diversity were fully on show, with Ben Glanfield, Matthew McFadden, Jackson Boswell, and Max Harries breezing through a few songs that showcased their growing range.

Borderline are celebrating their new single with a special Sydney show tonight (October 25th) at The Loft on Broadway. And if one exciting NZ act isn’t enough for you, energetic pop duo Foley and alt-pop provocateur YAHYAH will be backing up Borderline on the night. Tickets are available here.
