Charli XCX brought out Lorde to the perform her “Girl, so confusing” remix at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Monday night (September 23rd).

It marked the remix’s live debut with both Charli XCX and Lorde singing together in person. The former also invited Addison Rae onstage to perform her single “Diet Pepsi” together, as well as her “Von Dutch” remix.

Charli XCX released a surprise remix of “Girl, so confusing” with Lorde to put an end to rumours of a rift between the pair.

Charli used the now-coined Brat wall to announce the collaboration, by having a pair of painters write Lorde’s name on a white wall. To say the least: the girls and gays were gagged. After the announcement, Charli posted a snippet from the song to her private 360_brat page, where Lorde can be heard singing, “Well honestly, I was speechless when I woke up to your voicemail when you told me how you’re feeling, let’s work it out on the remix.”

On the original track, Charli sings about her overthinking, insecure tendencies around her “awkward,” frenemy relationship with a fellow singer, whom she doesn’t “have much in common” besides being two of the internet’s favorite artists.

“People say we’re alike / They say we’ve got the same hair / We talk about making music / But I don’t know if it’s honest,” sings Charli in the pre-chorus before she repeats the refrain, “It’s so confusing, sometimes, to be a girl.”

In the second verse of the song, Charli references the Kiwi artist’s “Team” lyric — “I’m kind of over gettin’ told to throw my hands up in the air” — and sings to Lorde, “You’re all about writing poems, but I’m about throwing parties / Think you should come to my party and put your hands up.”

Lorde also features on Charli’s Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat, a re-imagined version of her hit LP Brat featuring new songs and remixes of album cuts alongside other guests like Billie Eilish, Robyn, Troye Sivan, and Rae.

Many of the tracks on Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat are new, but some of the remixes — including “Guess” with Billie Eilish and “Girl, so confusing” with Lorde — have come out over the past couple of months.
