Amy Shark’s upcoming single “My Only Friend” featuring DeLonge completes the trifecta of blink-182 collaborators for the multi-platinum pop export.
Posting a photo of herself and the blink-182 frontman today, Shark has finally announced the single she first revealed to Rolling Stone AU/NZ during interviews for her March 2023 cover story.
Speaking to this journalist, Shark revealed “My Only Friend” was written in 2018 and was previously titled “Alien”. But with DeLonge being closely watched by the US government due to his obsession with extraterrestrial life, the track title had to be changed.
“He was like, ‘Hey, can we change the hook so I can be on it? I’ll show you,'” Shark said from her home studio back in 2022. “It used to be ‘You’re the alien in the room’. And now it’s ‘You’re my only friend in the room.'”
Shark has now collaborated with all three members of blink-182 following 2018’s “Psycho” featuring Mark Hoppus, 2020’s “C’mon” with Travis Barker, and now “My Only Friend” with DeLonge.
“My Only Friend”, which will be released next Friday July 26th, is about a person she dragged along to an event that’s not their scene. All signs suggest the track is about her husband and manager Shane, but when pressed on it for the Rolling Stone cover story, she said:
“Just listen to this riff okay? I’ll play you a little bit of it, but just listen to this for a second.” The snappy, pop-punk guitar part played. “Isn’t that sick?”
“My Only Friend” will feature on the multi-ARIA Award winner’s third album, Sunday Sadness. Set for release on August 16th, it follows the release of 2021’s Cry Forever and 2018’s Love Monster, both of which topped the ARIA Albums Chart.
