Drax Project are back with their second single of the year, “Disrespect”.
The Kiwi band have collaborated with Charley on the song, the Australian pop singer adding smoky vocals to the smooth anthem.
“Disrespect”, it turns out, has been a long time coming. “We wrote “Disrespect” in LA with Rogét (Chahayed), Imad (Royal), and Mary (Weitz) in a single day back in 2019,” Drax Project explain.
“It’s been in our heads ever since, but we all felt it was dying for a feature. In meeting Charley, we instantly knew that she was it! Her jumping onboard has taken the song to another level!”
Charley is equally happy with how the collaboration turned out. “I’m so excited to be collaborating with Drax Project as it’s been a bucket list goal of mine to record a song with them for years now!” she says. “The boys are so talented and just great humans, and it’s been such a fun experience to be on this song together.”
“Disrespect” follows the Wellington pop favourites’ first single of 2023, “Atmosphere”. That song was also originally written back in 2019, and the meaning behind the track warped over time, particularly following the pandemic. “Atmosphere” is an ode to picking oneself up and realising one’s potential when life tries to knock you down.
“We obviously had no idea what the world had in store for everyone when we wrote this song. After three years of a lot of peoples’ dreams being somewhat grounded, it feels like an optimistic world is coming back. It finally feels like the right time to release this song,” the band explain.
“Atmosphere” and “Disrespect” follow last year’s Blind Beat EP, which was curiously put together when the band decided to combat the boredom of pandemic lockdowns by creating the #blindbeatchallenge on TikTok, with each of the four-piece given 10 minutes on their own in the studio to come up with song parts on their respective instruments.
Drax Project’s “Disrespect” (ft. Charley) is out now.
